Virgin Falls backpacking

We left at 8 to go to Bridgestone Firestone wilderness after a Becky biscuit breakfast. Upon arrival, we found that it was closed due to hunting and soon heard gun shots.

So we decided to go to virgin falls.

We hiked 2.5 miles then ate lunch and crawled in a small cave. It took about a hour of downhill hiking to get to the campsite. The bucks had phô and the wolverines had sweet and sour tuna couscous for dinner.  Afterwards we played hide and tag in the reeds. Pocket knives were lost. Then followed the fire ceremony led by Frederick Behaylo and Owen Thompson. After the fire ceremony we went to sleep. The next morning brought a breakfast of oatmeal deluxe.  After packing for about a half mile, we got to virgin falls. We spent about fifteen minutes there, played hacky sack, then headed out. Our motivation was a fast-food stop on the way home. It took us about two and a half hours hike back to the parking lot. We headed out, stopped at hardy’s, then went home.

Bucks Patrol LBL Mountain Biking

The Bucks left for Land Between The Lakes to go mountain biking on a Saturday morning. After a stop at the visitor center, we picked a campsite, set up camp, and hopped on our bikes. We aimed to bike twenty five miles when we started. The terrain was very good for biking. We went on and off road. We had a few wipe outs and a lot of up hill. We had bagel sandwiches for lunch. After 14.98 miles, we got back at our campsite at about four o’clock. We had shepherd’s pie for dinner, and a very fun campfire ceremony. The next morning, we woke up, ate a breakfast of eggs and sausage, and headed out to a different trail where we biked 6.5 miles. On the way home, we stopped at Taco Bell and got back at four thirty.

Sewanee Hiking trip- 20 miles

This was a very fun day hike but also turned out to be one of the most brutal. We started around 9:00 and stayed in a group until about mile one where we split up.

We walked on while observing some very pretty views, acorn throwing, and the Sewanee wilderness. At around mile 6.5 we sat down for lunch and filled up water bottles. Despite some problems with knowledge of how to use the steripen, lunch was pretty good.

We then continued the backbreaking hike over the hills of Sewanee and a few paved areas. Around the 15 mile mark we hit a paved trail that was relatively flat and continued our trek as the sun ducked behind the trees.

It became complete darkness when we finally reached the cross on the hill but it made a great place to stop and rest.

From that point on our spirits were lifted and we continued hiking the last 1 mile on pavement. By the end of the hike our feet and legs were aching for relief so we got in the cars and went to hardys for some dinner without shoes. Overall this was a fun trip although I probably would not do this again for a while.

Ziplining

Going ziplining was really fun. We got to compare how well we did by watching as each person went by. During the zip, we would do things like put our feet above our heads and scream or try to do the moon walk in the air. Our instructor was great and after we landed( usually Mr. Mike on his butt, what he called a perfect landing,)we would scream walnuts so they knew we were off the hook. Before and after the zipping, we would hike, and we got to see a huge old coal mine.  All in all, it was a great trip.

Eagle Scout!

Troop 3 is happy to announce our newest Eagle Scout!  Rhys Bowen-Tanton passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review with flying colors last night.  Many congratulations to Rhys & his family who worked hard to support him through this process.

For his Eagle Project, Rhys built the lovely prayer garden located in the park next to East End Church.  If you haven’t stopped by to see the finished project yet, please do.  It is a beautiful addition to the park and the community.
We will let everyone know as soon as the date & time of Rhys’ Eagle Court of Honor has been set!

Boxwell Canoeing and Sailing

This was a very fun and succesful trip. Almost all the Otters finished their canoeing merit badge and all the Bucks got the sailing merit badge. The wind was perfect… so perfect, that a few sailboats capsized. The sail got a little muddy but otherwise they were okay. We played capture the flag and had a great campfire ceremony. For two days, the Bucks and the Otters were stealing a pink, plastic flamingo from each other. Overall this was a great trip.

Adventures in Port St. Joe

We arrived in Port St Joe and after a quick stop at the budget friendly Piggly Wiggly, we headed to camp.We spent the following days canoeing, sailing, fishing, and snorkeling in beautiful weather. The Barracuda patrol had some terrifying moments on the canoe trip-we forgot the forks and plates for our Ceasar salad. Luckily, Boy Scouts are always prepared and we had remembered to bring our fingers. Also, paddling up stream against the wind on the Apalachicola was a bit tough.

On the day that we chartered a boat for our deep sea fishing trip, we caught lots of yummy red snapper and mackerel. It was great fun however, I most likely will not choose to go deep sea fishing again if the words “choppy”, “sloppy”, or “rough as a corn dog” are used to describe the conditions at sea.

The menus for this High Adventure trip were outstanding and every boy got a turn at being cook for the day. The food was delicious and some of boys took the art of “slow food” to a new level. They are well on their way to earning cooking merit badges.

Other highlights of the trip were evening dips in the Gulf, a visit from a pair of rare Black Beaked Flamingoes, the Chuck Will’s Widow who sang to us all night, Armadillo, Osprey, Sting Ray and Dolphin sightings, the outdoor shower, teaching the boys traditional Scout songs like “You Shook Me All Night Long” by Sir Baden Powell (later covered by lesser know recording artists ACDC). I learned how to back up a canoe trailer, and that peace tree car air fresheners are an essential piece of equipment for all Scout trips, especially those involving fish and water. We have a great bunch of Scouts and Adult leaders and I can’t wait until next year!
