Ziplining

Going ziplining was really fun. We got to compare how well we did by watching as each person went by. During the zip, we would do things like put our feet above our heads and scream or try to do the moon walk in the air. Our instructor was great and after we landed( usually Mr. Mike on his butt, what he called a perfect landing,)we would scream walnuts so they knew we were off the hook. Before and after the zipping, we would hike, and we got to see a huge old coal mine.  All in all, it was a great trip.

Adventures in Port St. Joe

We arrived in Port St Joe and after a quick stop at the budget friendly Piggly Wiggly, we headed to camp.We spent the following days canoeing, sailing, fishing, and snorkeling in beautiful weather. The Barracuda patrol had some terrifying moments on the canoe trip-we forgot the forks and plates for our Ceasar salad. Luckily, Boy Scouts are always prepared and we had remembered to bring our fingers. Also, paddling up stream against the wind on the Apalachicola was a bit tough.

On the day that we chartered a boat for our deep sea fishing trip, we caught lots of yummy red snapper and mackerel. It was great fun however, I most likely will not choose to go deep sea fishing again if the words “choppy”, “sloppy”, or “rough as a corn dog” are used to describe the conditions at sea.

The menus for this High Adventure trip were outstanding and every boy got a turn at being cook for the day. The food was delicious and some of boys took the art of “slow food” to a new level. They are well on their way to earning cooking merit badges.

Other highlights of the trip were evening dips in the Gulf, a visit from a pair of rare Black Beaked Flamingoes, the Chuck Will’s Widow who sang to us all night, Armadillo, Osprey, Sting Ray and Dolphin sightings, the outdoor shower, teaching the boys traditional Scout songs like “You Shook Me All Night Long” by Sir Baden Powell (later covered by lesser know recording artists ACDC). I learned how to back up a canoe trailer, and that peace tree car air fresheners are an essential piece of equipment for all Scout trips, especially those involving fish and water. We have a great bunch of Scouts and Adult leaders and I can’t wait until next year!

We had trouble convincing Reuben to stop birdwatching and do some fishing

Emily’s trip report

This high adventure trip was better than going to Disney. The Palmetto bugs at Cloudland  Canyon were scarier than the haunted house, the line for climbing and rappelling was way shorter than the line for Space Mountain, and we had thunder and mist on the white water rafting trip just like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Lubos’s potatoes were better than anything the chefs at Disney could whip up, and while we didn’t get to meet any of the Disney characters, hanging out with the boys was very much like hanging out with Goofy. All of this for a fraction of the price of a one day Disney pass. I would like to spend more time in the Nantahala area and would love to take another white water rafting trip.
