Frozen Head Post

IMG_0374Frozen Head Trip, 9-21-13

We met at the church at six o’clock when it was still dark and raining. We packed our gear in the cars after eating delicious sausage and biscuits made by Miss Becky. The ride was about two and a half hours but it seemed shorter. When we arrived it was raining still, so we put on our rain gear and some scouts set up a pop-up tent to stand under so Miss Helen could talk to us about the trails that we were about to go on for the ten-mile hike. We decided to go on the hike first because the rain would clear in an hour or so. After we were briefed on the hiking trails and safety, we walked to the trail head. The hike was moderate but there were some steep places. We hiked about 5 miles to the place we would have lunch, which was a large rock overhang with a table under it, which was an Eagle Scout project. After we ate lunch, we hiked up a hill to the observation tower. That short hike to the observation tower was the most strenuous part in my opinion. It was rewarding to get to be on the observation tower. It was cool and misty because we were in a thick layer of fog. Nothing could really be seen because of the fog but I know it would be an excellent view if it was a clear day. We then began our hike down the mountain. On the way down, we saw an old well house covered in moss and later an old dynamite shack.
After the hike, we set up our tents while others set up the camp kitchens for each patrol. After everything was set up, a lot of us were told to look for firewood. While the Honey Badgers were preparing to make their pizzas, we collected as much firewood as we could, but it was either soaked with water or rotten. After we had diner, we tried to make a fire, but it goes out, then Libor steps in and makes a huge fire. After the fire got going, we started the camp fire ceremony and had fun, then we went to sleep. The breakfast was good the next morning. The Otters had breakfast burritos with eggs, cheese, and sausage. The Bucks had oatmeal, but I don’t know what the Honey Badgers had. After breakfast, we just had fun looking for salamanders, newts, and crawfish in the creek, and climbing up roots sticking out of a dirt drop-off. After packing up our things, we were going to go to a waterfall to swim and have fun but on the hike up there, we realized it was almost time to go, so we turned back. We got in the cars and left. We shortly arrived at the church, put up the gear, and put out the perishable food for the scouts to take. Soon, the parking lot was empty and everyone had gone home.

Troop 3 Honors Ms. Becky

At the August Court of Honor Troop 3 Scouts presented a framed & signed Troop photo to our beloved Committee Chair Becky Merin in honor of her many years of selfless service to the troop (Committee Chair, Fundraising Chair, Summer Camp Coordinator, Chief Sausage Biscuit Maker, Ski Lodge Hourly Check-in Queen, COH Hostess with the Mostest, and so much more) as well as her unparalleled generosity in contributing more than $2000 in haircuts to our troop Scholarship Fund to date.  We love you, Ms. Becky!

In the Scouts’ words: “Ms. Becky has been one of those people who you can count on time after time in Boy Scouts.  She works for no pay, and doesn’t ask for anything in return.  Whether it’s cutting hair to raise money for the troop, or organizing the Tomato Fest stand, Ms. Becky has been there for us.  It’s time to give recognition to the person who most definitely deserves it, and she certainly does.  She’s a mom to the whole troop and is at the meetings whenever she can be.  We can go to her if we don’t understand something or if we just need help.  Ms. Becky, we love you so much here in the troop, and hope that the next decade will be just as good as the last.”

“Ms. Becky Is Our Sunshine” (to the tune of “Your are my Sunshine”)

You are our sunshine
our only sunshine
you make us happy
When skies are gray
You’ll never know dear
How much we love you
Please don’t take our sunshine away.

You make us biscuits
They are delicious
You excel at Tomato Fest
You cut our hair and
Fry lots of turkeys
Oh dear Becky you’re the best

You are our sunshine
Our only sunshine
You make us happy
When skies are gray
You’ll never know dear
How much we love you
Please don’t take our sunshine away.

White Water Canoeing

Around 10 at night, we arrived at the campground on the Hiawassee River. It was dark, and we still had to set up out tents. Our troop had a small area of land to put all the tents on. We set up our tents, then we went on a journey to find the water and bathrooms. The first person we asked pointed down the road to a bathhouse. He said there was water there too. It was about a quarter mile walk to the bathhouse. We filled up the water bucket, and headed back. When we arrived back at our site, we noticed a few Porta-Jon’s right next to us. We walked over, and there was a water faucet sticking out of the ground. A few minutes later we were in our tent ready to go to sleep.

We awoke the next morning ready to start the trip. The people teaching the school called us over and put us into groups. They went over instructions, and we drove to our destination. We put our canoes in the water and paddled around where the water wasn’t very fast. We learned some maneuvers, and paddled back to shore for lunch. After lunch, we paddled down stream all the way to our campsite. Along the way we went over small rapids, but the next day’s would be even bigger.

When we arrived at our site Mr. Libor, our scout leader, had a variaty of mushrooms for us to eat. My favorite was the chicken mushroom. It tasted exactly like chicken. They called us for dinner, and we were having spaghetti. After dinner we played capture the flag. we rounded up all of the scout troops to play. We divided it up into three teams, and played until dark.

We awoke the next day, and had the same routine until we were on our way up stream. It was a 30 minute drive at the most, and this time we saw what was ahead of us. We put our canoes in the water, and ahead of us were the first big rapids. We handled them pretty smoothly, and were off to a good start. We faced many rapids like it, and I think everyone had fun.

Wave Pool 25 Mile Biking Trip

We departed on a Beautiful Saturday morning, only five riders willing to go the full twenty-five miles. The first quarter of the trip went smoothly, no bike problems and a fast pace. However, when we hit the wave pool we lost a rider due to an unusual sickness. The trip continued on only with for riders to Kohls but the river had flooded the path.flooded pathAfter a slight detour we were back on path and on our way. We went through the rolling hills and finally made it to the turnaround point, the dam.

damThe way back to the wave pool was buttery and trouble free, except for a broken chain that slowed us down a bit.

too much water

We quickly got back to make up some time and had a great time at the wave pool. Overall this was a great trip and I am already looking forward to next year.

Boxwell 2013 Summer Camp

This year at Boxwell we had a lot of fun going to classes and finishing our merit badges. Some of the classes were lifesaving, motor boating, and green bar. We cleaned up the graveyard at the camp, which Luke’s ancestors were buried. Every day we went to breakfast, lunch, and dinner. During Breakfast we had flag raising, and during dinner we had flag lowering. We loved playing games at camp, and going to the trading post for ice cream and icees. Every day we had to build a camp gadget. A camp gadget is something that you make that is helpful that includes lashings. Every day we have to make one camp gadget, and we get points for how good it is. On the last day we packed up and went to a campfire ceremony. After the campfire we went home wanting to come again next year.
