Turkey Fry Fundraiser

The scouts that showed up included me, Jordan R., Noah, Leo, Matthew, Josh L., and Chris.  We arrived at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday to start setting up.  We brought all the equipment outside.  Unfortunately, there was a wind problem but Mr. Steve solved that by having us put tables in front of the fryers.  We had a delicious breakfast cooked for us, including sausage biscuits, doughnuts, and coffee.  The actual frying started around 7:00 or 7:30.  In between shifts we went and played soccer in the park.  Jordan and I were able to teach the younger scouts how to prepare turkeys and wrap the cooked ones, so next year they will be able to help others with that.  We finished up around noon and cleaned up.  We taste tested one of our turkeys for lunch and I have to say, it was delicious.  Even though we didn’t sell as many turkeys as we expected, it was a good learning experience for the younger scouts and I think it’s safe to say that we all had a pretty good time.

Savage Gulf Report

We arrived at the campsite at 9:30. We had to set up camp quickly because we had to be back from our 10 mile hike before dark. We hiked for about 2 and a half miles then stopped for lunch and to fill up our water bottles. Some people took a short cut back to the campsite, and the others kept going. We kept hiking, turned around and headed back. We got back well before dark. Everyone did great but Lubos got blisters. When we returned to the campsite we started collecting firewood. We had Pho for dinner and pudding for dessert. Then we told stories around the campfire and went to bed. We woke up the next morning and had breakfast. The new scouts worked on advancement requirements. We packed up our tents and loaded up most of the gear into the cars. We then went to all of the campsites to pick up trash for our service project. When we were done we ate lunch, which included Horace’s popular deer summer sausage, loaded up the rest of the gear, and went home. The campgrounds had a strange smell but otherwise it was a good trip. Everyone appreciated the heated restrooms.

Natchez Trace Report

We left the church around 8:00 am and arrived at our campsite at about 11:30. We unpacked, set up camp, then ate lunch. When we were finished, we did a bike check and left for the twenty five mile bike ride. We stopped at a rest stop and filled up our water bottles at about twelve miles. We went half a mile more and turned back. On our way back we stopped at an old mine. We got back to our campsite around 4:00. We cooked dinner at 5:00 then had our campfire activity of songs and stories. At about 9:30 we went to sleep. The next morning we woke up and had breakfast. Then we got ready for our fifteen mile bike ride. We left at 10:00. We rode and stopped at a waterfall. We walked around a little bit and headed back. We got back and ate lunch then packed up. We loaded up the cars and headed back. When we got back we put all our gear back and headed home. All together we rode 40 miles! It was a great trip.

Rock Island Report

We arrived at our campsite Friday evening. We set up our tents, had cracker barrel, and went to sleep. The next morning we had breakfast and got our canoes and kayaks ready. Then we headed out on the water. We went about six miles then started looking for a place to eat lunch. After about five minutes we found a nice place on the bank to eat. There, we spent about an hour helping the new wolverines with their canoeing merit badge. When we were done, we went back to camp and swam a little. That night after dinner the Hurtles told stories around the camp fire. Then we went to bed at  around ten. The next morning, we ate breakfast and packed up. We then drove to a waterfall and swam for awhile. We ate lunch then drove back to the church. The weather was great and everyone had a great time.

Wave Pool Report

We rode our bikes to the wave pool on August 20th. We left from the church in the morning and rode through Shelby Bottoms and over the bridge. Those of us that did the ten mile ride stayed at the pool. The others rode an extra fifteen miles and met us later. We had a lot of fun riding slides and swimming. We cooked hot dogs for lunch, and some of us had snacks at the snack bar. After we were done swimming we left in the afternoon and rode back to the church. Everyone had a great time.

Tomato Festival Fundraiser

  • The Kids area at the Tomato Festival opened early this year to beat the heat. We sold Becky’s famous sausage biscuits with a slice of tomato, muffins, and coffee. Later in the day we fired up the grill and served hotdogs. The snowcones were a big hit again. We had a really good crowd, it was a successful fundraiser, and we had a lot of fun!

Leadership troop information update

New Leadership

Troop 3 had elections this past week at the meeting. Tonight, the website committee met at Ugly Mugs to begin the transition. Antonin, the former webmaster helped to train the new webmaster, Johan, and assistant webmaster, Josh, by updating all of the scout pages with the new leadership positions.

Our former Senior Patrol Leader, Rhys, has been appointed to a new position in the troop, the Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. This new role will be responsible for managing community service opportunities, including Tomato Fest and Feeding the Homeless at the Downtown Presbyterian Church.

The new Senior Patrol Leader, Jordan, chose Eric to be his Assistant Senior Patrol Leader.

Here are some links where you can see a full list of the new Troop Leaders, Hurtles Leaders, and Wolverines Leaders.
