Adventures in Port St. Joe

We arrived in Port St Joe and after a quick stop at the budget friendly Piggly Wiggly, we headed to camp.We spent the following days canoeing, sailing, fishing, and snorkeling in beautiful weather. The Barracuda patrol had some terrifying moments on the canoe trip-we forgot the forks and plates for our Ceasar salad. Luckily, Boy Scouts are always prepared and we had remembered to bring our fingers. Also, paddling up stream against the wind on the Apalachicola was a bit tough.

On the day that we chartered a boat for our deep sea fishing trip, we caught lots of yummy red snapper and mackerel. It was great fun however, I most likely will not choose to go deep sea fishing again if the words “choppy”, “sloppy”, or “rough as a corn dog” are used to describe the conditions at sea.

The menus for this High Adventure trip were outstanding and every boy got a turn at being cook for the day. The food was delicious and some of boys took the art of “slow food” to a new level. They are well on their way to earning cooking merit badges.

Other highlights of the trip were evening dips in the Gulf, a visit from a pair of rare Black Beaked Flamingoes, the Chuck Will’s Widow who sang to us all night, Armadillo, Osprey, Sting Ray and Dolphin sightings, the outdoor shower, teaching the boys traditional Scout songs like “You Shook Me All Night Long” by Sir Baden Powell (later covered by lesser know recording artists ACDC). I learned how to back up a canoe trailer, and that peace tree car air fresheners are an essential piece of equipment for all Scout trips, especially those involving fish and water. We have a great bunch of Scouts and Adult leaders and I can’t wait until next year!

An evening dip in the gulf

We had trouble convincing Reuben to stop birdwatching and do some fishing

What Shall We Do With a Whiney Boy Scout (Florida High Adventure Version)

What shall we do with a whiney boy scout?
What shall we do with a whiney boy scout?
What shall we do with a whiney boy scout?
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Way hay and up he rises,
Way hay and up he rises,
Way hay and up he rises,
Early in the morning!

Stick him in the shower with the roaches,
Stick him in the shower with the roaches,
Stick him in the shower with the roaches,
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Send him for a swim with the chum bag,
Send him for a swim with the chum bag,
Send him for a swim with the chum bag,
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Drop him in the shark hole without a motor,
Drop him in the shark hole without a motor,
Drop him in the shark hole without a motor,
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Make him paddle upwind against the current,
Make him paddle upwind against the current,
Make him paddle upwind against the current,
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Toss his Dramamine in the deep sea,
Toss his Dramamine in the deep sea,
Toss his Dramamine in the deep sea,
Early in the morning!

[CHORUS]

Take away his Gold Bond Powder,
Take away his Gold Bond Powder,
Take away his Gold Bond Powder,
Early in the morning!

That’s what we do with a whiney boy scout,
That’s what we do with a whiney boy scout,
That’s what we do with a whiney boy scout,
Early in the morning!

Trip Report

Florida was amazing! My favorite part was when we went fishing. We caught fish that I have never seen before. The fish fry was amazing, and anyone who tells you other wise is crazy. The only bad part was the sand. It got everywhere that you wouldn’t want it to. Although kayaking and canoing was hard going against the wind, it was still fun. When we went snorkeling, we found sea urchins, sand dollars, mussels, horseshoe crabs, and even some sea turtles. All in all, we had a great trip.

On the way to go fishing

Ode to Gold Bond. That’s what we’re calling it. That’s what we’re calling the boys that start singing when they put Gold Bond on. The sea waters are very salty and sandy, so it’s very easy to get chaffed. Gold Bond is a magic powder that makes the pain go away.:). Anyways, we’re all excited about going fishing today, some of us more than others. We’re going on a charter boat that’s going to pull us out to deep into the sea for some fishin. We plan on getting sharks, mackerel, flounder, and mabye even some sea bass. I can’t wait to see what we catch.

Today was fun for everybody. We went fishing, snorkeling, sailing, and cannoing. A lot of us saw sea urchins for the first time and there were a lot of them. While some of the people were fishing, they saw a five foot shark in the water along with some dolphins.  After diner, we all went to the beach to play capture the flag and to go buggie boarding. After getting out of the water from buggie boarding, almost all of us were a little chaffed from the salt. After the teams were decided, we started capture the flag. After a little bit in the game, we won because David and Reuben silently walked over and stole there flag.  After that we all waddled home.
